Monsoons are welcomed by one and all as it not only brings the water trickling down from the skies but also cool breeze, allowing us to enjoy sipping on some hot chocolate. Children love monsoons because they get to splash around in the puddles and play in the mud.
After a while it becomes tough to identify your child among their friends, all drenched in the rain and dirty by playing around the puddles. Along with the fun, monsoon also brings a lot of infections and diseases. The puddles become a breeding ground for mosquitos, leading to diseases like
malaria.
Before you allow your child to enjoy the chills of monsoon, you must be cautious regarding their safety. Here are a few tips that will help you combat the monsoon woes.
1. Protect your child’s feet: Children are naïve and will immediately run towards a puddle. If you cannot stop your child from splashing into the puddles everytime, you can at least protect them. Make sure your child’s feet are protected so that the dirty waters do not enter. Gum boots are a perfect alternative, which will keep the waters out. If your child has any open wounds, it is better not to send them out as the infection can spread.
2. Avoid street side foods: Who doesn’t love piping hot tea and warm snacks on the streets during the monsoon? We all sure do. But one must avoid eating road side snacks as infections spread easily during the monsoon. Your child may become prone to water borne diseases upon eating contaminated foods.
3. Apply mosquito repellents: Mosquitoes thrive during the monsoons, which is why you must apply mosquito repellent on your child’s exposed skin. Arms, legs, face and neck must be covered with the mosquito repellent cream. You can also apply a mosquito patch, which can be stuck on your child’s sleeve for protection from the insects.
4. Carry own water: If your child goes to school or out to play, it is wise to give them their own water bottle. This will ensure that your child doesn’t drink water from any outside source, which might be contaminated. Make sure you boil the water and allow it to cool before filling it in your child’s water bottle.
5. Remove the damp clothes: If your child gets drenched in the rains and comes home in rain soaked clothes, immediately ask them to remove the clothes. Ask your child to have a warm bath with a disinfectant soap. Damp clothes will invite flu and other diseases.
6. Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables: Fruits and vegetables that contain loads of vitamin C and B12 will help boost your children’s immunity. Lemon, tomatoes, oranges, broccoli, strawberries, dairy, eggs, are all great sources of these Vitamins. Make sure you wash the groceries thoroughly before cooking them. Serve the foods hot and fresh for your child’s healthy immunity.
7. Keep the house clean: With the outsides being wet and dirty during the monsoons, the house also tends to get dirty. People come and in and out with their dirty feet and shoes, making the house dirty. Thus, ask everyone to take off their shoes outside the house. Clean your home with a disinfectant solution twice a day.
Use anti-bacterial washes and ensure you push away any accumulated water, especially in bathrooms down drains.
