Travelling with your toddler can get really tricky, especially if you have tons of luggage to carry with. A smooth flight or a smooth train ride can only be assured with a happy baby. At times no matter what you do, your toddler acts fussy, which not only causes troubles for you but even for the co passengers. The worst part is to have prying eyes of the co-passengers on you. It’s like being in a dark theatre room, where your crying toddler invites the angry attention of the audiences towards you. You are left with nothing but a cheeky little smile to give them. Do you want to know how to avoid this dreary situation? If yes, below are the tips that will help you ensure a smooth travelling time with your toddler.
Book a direct flight: If you are travelling with your toddler in a flight, it is only wise to book a direct flight. This will save you from the hassles of getting down the flight, checking into another one and also spend hours lobbying around the airport with your baby. Spending lesser time in transit means lesser chances of facing mid-flight tantrums.
Visit the restroom: A wise mother once said, that you must visit the airport restroom before you board the flight. You must obviously relieve yourself and also check on your toddler’s bathroom needs. Urge your toddler to use the bathroom. You can check on your toddler’s diaper if it needs to be changed. Apply powder and diaper creams before exiting the bathroom. This will save you from doing all these things in the flight’s tiny lavatory.
Pre-board the flight: You might want to take an advantage of pre-boarding the flight. This will help you settle down in the flight smoothly before the other passengers start showing up. It will also help your young one settle in before the journey begins.
Buy a separate seat for your child: Especially when you’re travelling with our toddler on a flight, it is safe to buy a government-approved child safety restraint system. The best place for your toddler during a flight is not on your lap. Your arms are incapable of handling a child during any turbulence.
Pack double necessities: It is wise to pack up on double the necessities for your toddler. Be it diapers, baby lotion, snacks and clothes, pack everything in a generous quantity so that you always have a back-up of them. The last thing you want to deal on a flight is a hungry cranky baby.
Dress your toddler comfortably: You might feel tempted to dress up your toddler in the new trendy airport outfit that you purchased. But remember that you will be sitting in a flight with your toddler, who might get cranky anytime with the slightest of discomfort experienced. So dress up your child in comfortable layered clothing. The clothes should be easy to take off in case of bathroom visits.
Stack up on meds: Necessary and basic medicines like that of stomach ache, nausea or your toddler’s regular medicines (if any), should be stacked up in abundance. Having emergency medicines handy will save you from a crying toddler during the flight.
Pack extra clothing for you: You must have obviously packed a few extra pair of clothes for your child. But what about you? In case your child happens to spill any food or drink on you, you will need a pair of fresh clothes to change in. You might also want to carry basic medicines for yourself in your hand luggage.
Protect your child’s ears: Air travel is sensitive on our ears. Our ears get blocked when we are travelling at a high altitude, due to the low pressure created in the cabin. Your child might develop pain in the ears or have constant ringing in them. It is hence important to cover your child’s ears with ear plugs. You can even ask your pediatrician for ear drops.
Keep distractions ready: The only thing that distracts a crying toddler is his/her bunch of toys. You can carry some of your toddler’s favourite toys during air travel. This will keep the toddler busy and happy. Remember, a happy toddler in a flight makes the co-passengers happy.
